Abstract/Summary:
The manual provides the advanced design student and professional designer with information and instruction in designing printed textiles for mass production. There are few books on the market that cover this design process. Those that exist do not focus on preliminary study and design research as presented in this manual.; The project was developed in four parts. Part I, "Understanding Textiles," includes a history of textile decoration and information regarding contemporary fibers, fabric construction, textile finishes, color application, and applied design and production techniques.; Part II, "Design Research," includes information regarding the textile industry, market research and analysis, and sources of inspiration and historical reference. The manual supports the thesis that patterns of change in fashion are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. It provides information regarding theories of fashion cycles of consumer acceptance, forecasting services to determine anticipated design and color directions, and technology regarding contemporary methods of manufacturing. The value of historic decorative textiles is discussed as a means of inspiration and analysis of fashion cycles.; Part III, "Design Process," includes information regarding types of printed textile designs and documentary reproduction and adaptation designs. This is followed by instruction in designing printed textiles, developing repeat patterns and color combinations, according to industry specifications.; Part IV, "Professional Practices," includes information on design presentation, portfolio development, marketing, and management skills.; Illustrative photographs of textiles from "The Mrs. Stanley C. Lewis Historic Textile Collection" are used throughout the manual. Illustrations and designs provide examples of new interpretations of traditional styles and themes. Excellence in the designs demonstrates the value of historic textiles as resources for designers for inspiration, analysis of fashion cycles, and sources for documentary reproduction and adaptation designs.
