Since the Reform and opening up,with the rapid development of China’s social economy and the continuous improvement of residents’living standards, the corresponding residential energy consumption and CO2 emissions have also increased rapidly. To date, the residential sector has become the second largest source of CO2emissions followed by the industrial sector. However, most of these previous studies focused on the industry when researching the CO2 reduction policy. Moreover, little attention was paid to the residential sector.Existing studies were mainly conducted at national level or developed coastal city level, while the related studies on China’s underdeveloped areas were still rare. Here, based on the dual perspective of urban-rural,we selected Jiangxi Province as the case, and calculated the direct and indirect residential CO2 emissions in urban and rural Jiangxi. We then explored the influencing factors affecting the CO2 emissions. In addition,we also researched the decoupling relationship between residential CO2 emissions and economic growth. This paper aims to provide reference for the government to carry out residential CO2 reduction. The main results are as follows:(1)We used the model to estimate the direct residential CO2 emissions in Jiangxi urban and rural regions during 2000-2017.The results showed that the direct urban and rural residential CO2 emissions presented an increasing trend, and the urban-rural gap narrowed, but there still existed urban-rural duality.See from the per capita CO2emissions,the direct urban residential CO2 emissions per capita showed a decreasing trend, while the direct urban residential CO2 emissions presented an increasing trend.Overall, the trend of urban-rural gap also decreased. The tendency of CO2 emissions structure turned to be diversified in urban and rural Jiangxi. The proportion of coal decreased significantly, while the proportion of electric power, oil and natural gas increased continuously.Currently, the urban and rural residential CO2 emissions structure were mainly dominated by electricity. However, the proportion of natural gas in urban and rural regions were still low,and the proportion of coal in rural region was still high. Thus, there was great space to optimize the energy consumption structure in urban and rural regions.(2)Using the LMDI method, this paper decomposed the influencing factors affecting the direct urban and rural residential CO2emissions.The results showed that the per capita consumption expenditure effect was the most important factor promoting the CO2emissions growth, while the energy price was the most important factor inhibiting the CO2 emissions increase.(3)In order to further explore the decoupling relationship between direct residential CO2 emissions and consumption expenditure in urban and rural Jiangxi,we introduced the Tapio decoupling model to calculate the decoupling indicators. The results showed that the weak decoupling occurred between direct residential CO2emissions and consumption expenditure in Jiangxi urban region during 2000-2017,while the expansive negative decoupling occurred in rural regions.(4)Based on the input-output table,we set the model to calculate the indirect residential CO2 emissions in 2002,2007,2012 and 2017.Over the study period, the indirect urban and rural residential CO2 emissions showed an increasing trend, and the growth rate of urban was faster than that of rural. Thus, the urban-rural gap still expanded.See from the per capita indirect CO2 emissions, the per capita indirect urban and rural residential CO2 emissions also showed an increasing trend.Overall, the trend of urban-rural gap showed a decreasing trend. From the perspective of indirect residential CO2 emissions structure, residential residence played the dominant role.(5)By establishing the decomposition model of the influencing factors of indirect residential CO2 emissions,we decomposed the influencing factors affecting the indirect residential CO2 emissions in Jiangxi urban and rural regions during 2002-2017.The results showed that the living standard effect was the most important factor promoting the indirect urban and rural residential CO2 emissions increase, while the technology level effect was the most important factor inhibiting the indirect urban and rural residential CO2 emissions growth. Finally, based on the above-mentioned results, the corresponding countermeasures for residential CO2 reduction in urban and rural Jiangxi are put forward.
