Research On Adaptive Design Strategies For The Whole Life Cycle Of Residential Buildings

With the rapid development of urbanization in the past 30 years,equal emphasis has been put on construction and retrofitting.The "14th Five-Year Plan" clearly pointed out the importance of improving the quality of urbanization,retrofitting the residentials,and regenerating the old communities.But those projects did not achieve optimal effect because of the lack of adaptive design.Those problems not only have impeded the implementation of retrofitting,but also ambiguous the transformation effect.This study included two stages.In the first stage,it proposed to establish a new system for adaptable design of residential.It first phased the buildings’ whole life into five phases:Design,Maintenance,Retrofitting,Regeneration,and Deconstruction.Then,the building was hierarchized and divided into five layers: Structure,Envelope system,Space,Services,and Stuff.Thirdly,the adaptability was classified into four types: Component adaptability,Space adaptability,Environmental adaptability,and Climate adaptability.Lastly,the adaptive design strategies system for the whole life cycle of residential building was established.In the second stage,this study selected residential buildings as the main research object,starting from the initial stage of design,exploring the adaptable design strategies of the whole life cycle.It first summarized,sorted out,and numbered the adaptable design strategies that can be applied to residential buildings.Secondly,this study found out the unsuitable strategies by comparing all those adaptable design methods one by one,and exploring the solution.Thirdly,the new system with specific design method was established.It formed the integration of adaptive design methods for buildings’ whole life cycle so that it can maintain the performance,meet the changeable needs of occupants,and extend the lifespan.The objective of this study is to solve the existing problems of retrofitting and provide a new thinking pattern of construction and renovation in the design and planning stage.It also aims to establish the adaptable design strategy system for residential in its whole life cycle.In addition,this study provides decision-making reference for designers and related practitioners,which is of positive significance for solving the huge stock and promoting the development of building adaptive design and sustainable renovation.
