In the field of contemporary architectural design,we can often see that many architects use the design method of module combination to generate buildings. The causes of this phenomenon and the commonness and advantages of such buildings are the main research content of this paper. This paper takes the spatial flexibility as the entry point and foothold to study this kind of architecture, and through in-depth analysis of a large number of typical cases, identifies three variables that affect the spatial flexibility in this kind of architecture--module ontology, module location and module number, and proposes the design method of realizing the spatial flexibility by changing the three variables respectively. This paper starts with the basic concept of modularity, reconstructs the modularity theory with the internal problems of the architectural discipline through explanatory research and logical demonstration, defines the concept of modularity and modularity variation, and forms the basic cognition of the modularity operation of architecture. On this basis, through the discussion of the generation features, spatial features and contemporary features of contemporary modular architecture, the intrinsic motivation of the application of modular variant design techniques is clarified. In the specific discussion of the application of design techniques, the influence of the change of three variables, namely the shape and size of the module ontology, the relative position of the module and the number of modules,on the spatial flexibility is discussed respectively. The third chapter describes how to realize the spatial flexibility through the difference between modules and the difference between individual modules. The fourth chapter describes how to realize spatial flexibility through the change of relative position of two-dimensional array and three-dimensional stack. The fifth chapter explains how to achieve spatial flexibility by reducing the number of modules inside the building and the number of modules outside the building. The main research results of this paper are as follows: through in-depth interpretation of a large number of contemporary architectural examples through graphic analysis method and design process analysis method, the design method matrix of multiple modular variants realizing spatial flexibility at different levels is obtained, which is expected to provide reference for architectural design practice.
