Construction Strategy Of Modern Small Diameter Timber Architecture

Small diameter timber used to be widely used as building materials.With the continuous development of new materials,new structures and new technologies,Small diameter timber have been considered as "waste" for a long time due to the defects of their own material properties,natural morphology and processing technology,and their application in construction is greatly limited.In recent years,under the background of sustainable development and green building concept,the main body of wood resources utilization in China has been transferred from traditional natural forest to artificial forest;at the same time,small diameter log has aroused the favor of architects again,because it has the ecological advantages of extensive material sources,the technical advantages to meet the strength requirements of modern wooden architecture,and the expression advantages to express the naturalness,regionality and vernacular of architecture.Based on the unique material characteristics of Small diameter timber and from the perspective of construction concept,this paper explores from several aspects of material,structure,node and performance,aiming to transform Small diameter timber from abandoned wood into usable building resources,and apply them to modern wooden architecture,so as to alleviate the problem of forest resources shortage in China.First of all,from the domestic and foreign authoritative wooden structure websites,international award winning works and magazine published cases,the paper finds and analyzes the examples of small-diameter log buildings,and selects typical cases for further field investigation.After defining the relevant concepts and carrying out a lot of theoretical research,the paper based on the basic characteristics of Small diameter timber,attempts to change the cognitive misunderstanding of traditional small-diameter log construction from three aspects of structural system strength,node construction method and spatial form performance that modern architecture pays attention to,and puts forward corresponding construction principles.Then,under the guidance of the principles,through case analysis,graphic language and comparative analysis,the paper systematically summarizes the structural design strategy,node design strategy and morphological performance strategy of small-diameter log construction.In the part of structural design,three types of structural systems are proposed,including making up the defect of material size,optimizing the shape of natural curve and dispersing the concentrated load of structure.In the part of joint design,three aspects are discussed,including simplifying the connection process,strengthening the concept of material saving and optimizing the traditional technology.Three kinds of joint connection modes,including implicit structure,detachable structure and composite structure,are proposed respectively.In the part of form expression,it discusses the material form,structure form and node form,and puts forward three forms of expression techniques: the comparison of curve shape and straight line shape,the comparison of natural form and order structure,and the comparison of plain texture and exquisite craft.The focus of this study is to,on the one hand,break through the traditional cognitive misunderstanding of Small diameter timber as "waste materials",excavate the application potential and construction advantages of Small diameter timber as building structural components,and solve the problem of material defects in the construction design of Small diameter timber at the present stage.On the other hand,from the new perspective of the coordination of structural technology and aesthetic performance,this paper discusses the application mode of small-diameter log in modern architecture,and puts forward the construction and design strategy of small-diameter log with perfect integration of technology and art,so as to promote the innovative application and development of small-diameter log architecture.
