Due to the emergence of environmental issues such as greenhouse gas emissions,global warming,and waste disposal,biotechnology has received extensive attention in the past few decades.Compared with petroleum,a non-renewable energy source,biomaterials have become one of the main hotspots in pavement engineering due to their advantages of renewable,low cost,low energy consumption,and environmental protection.This paper aims to develop a new sustainable modified asphalt material while expanding the application of fish waste.The silane coupling agent was used to organize the surface of the fish scale powder,and the best treatment process was obtained through orthogonal experiments.The fish scale powder modified asphalt with 4%,8%,12%,and 16%fish scale powder content was prepared.A series of conventional tests,rheological tests,and microscopic tests were used to analyze and study modified asphalt’s performance and modification mechanism at different dosages before and after surface organic modification.Based on the test results,the following main conclusions can be drawn:(1)Nine different surface organic processes are used to prepare different fish scale powder modified asphalt.Based on the orthogonal test method,compare and analyze nine modified asphalts’ physical properties and storage stability.The optimal solution for the surface organic modification of fish scale powder with silane coupling agent KH-560 was:the silane coupling agent content was 1.0%,the water-to-alcohol ratio of the solvent was 3:7,the hydrolysis time was 60 min,and the modification time was 30 min.(2)Based on the conventional performance tests and dynamic shear rheometer tests,these results show that the fish scale powder reduces the penetration and non-recoverable creep compliance of the asphalt.However,this material increases the softening point,softening point difference,viscosity,rutting factor,storage modulus,loss modulus,and elastic recovery rate of the asphalt.These results indicate that the fish scale powder improves the rutting resistance,viscous and elastic components,and storage stability of asphalt at high temperatures.Although the addition of fish scale powder reduces the compatibility of the asphalt,as the amount of powder increases,the storage stability of the fish scale powder modified asphalt becomes worse.After the surface is organized,the compatibility between fish scale powder and asphalt is improved.(3)The ductility test shows that the fish scale powder can reduce the ductility of the asphalt.However,after the organic modification,the agglomeration of the powder is improved,the stress concentration effect is weakened,and the ductility of the modified asphalt increases.The bending beam rheometer test shows that although the fish scale powder is unfavorable to the asphalt’s low-temperature performance,it may not change the low-temperature performance grade of the asphalt.In addition,compared with untreated fish scale powder,the surface-treated fish scale powder improves the aging resistance of the asphalt.(4)After the surface is organized,the dispersibility of the fish scale powder in the asphalt is improved,and the agglomeration phenomenon is reduced.In this stage,the heat is distributed more quickly,improving the asphalt’s anti-aging performance.The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy show that the silane coupling agent KH-560 was successfully connected to the surface of the fish scale powder.Meanwhile,there is no obvious chemical reaction between the fish scale powder and the neat asphalt.In addition,scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy analysis prove that the agglomeration effect between the fish scale powder particles after the surface organic modification is weakened,and the dispersion is improved.
