With the rapid development of the electronic information industry, the data centers designed earlier need to be optimized for their future development. When redeploying servers in an existing data center racks or deploying new racks in an existing data center,it is very important to conduct a rack-level local thermal environment assessment for the target area in data centers to ensure that it meets the cooling requirements of the devices. However, there are few theoretical and experimental studies to solve this problem, and the relevant experimental and simulative methods are not mature enough. Therefore, the experimental measurement and CFD numerical simulation of local thermal environment were carried out for the real data centers in operation. The main work is as follows:1.A test system for data center thermal environment was designed and produced. The composition and structure of the server simulator were designed after simplifying according to the real 2U servers. An experimental platform was built to test the characteristics of the 2U server simulator. For a server simulator, the resistance characteristic curve, the temperature transient response curve and the stable temperature of the variable power of each heating element were obtained. Its characteristics were analyzed and compared with real 2U servers, which proves that the server simulator can achieve the requirements to simulate the real working server.2.The experimental study on the local thermal environment of a real data center was carried out by using the data center thermal environment server simulator test system.A partially loaded rack was taken as the research object.Local thermal environment evaluation index IOM was selected, being combined with the experimental results, the influence of factors on the thermal environment of the target rack was quantitatively analyzed. The results show that the four 2U servers are better placed in the lower part of the rack.In this case, the target rack has a minimum IOM(0.28).The blind plate has a significant impact on the rack thermal environment. The IOM of the target rack could be increased by 718% without the blind plate. When the louver Angle of the air supply outlets on the floor is 60°,the rack inlet air temperature is lower and the vertical distribution of it is more uniform. In addition, the thermal environment characteristics of the target rack under the dynamic change of server power were also studied.3.A CFD simulation method for evaluating the rack-level thermal environment of the data center was presented and experimentally verified. The computed field of this method selected the target rack, the racks on both sides and some cold and hot aisles. The free opening was used to represent the air outlet area, and the resistance was adopted to simplify the server.Five typical server layout cases were simulated.Comparing the experimental and simulation inlet and outlet temperature results,it is found that most of the deviations between them are less than 10% and the two trends are relatively consistent. Therefore,it is feasible to establish a CFD model to simulate the rack thermal environment for such data centers. In this thesis, the experiment and simulation study on the local thermal environment of the data center provides a new evaluation method for partial optimization of the data centers in operation.
