The full utilization and effective protection of cultivated land resources are closely related to the national economy and people’s livelihood. In recent years, with China’s economic and social development, industrialization and urbanization have accelerated,a large number of agricultural labor force has been lost, the marginalization of cultivated land has become more and more serious, and the abandonment of cultivated land has become a prominent problem in the utilization of rural land resources. It is of great practical significance to pay attention to how to effectively curb the abandonment of cultivated land, protect cultivated land resources, and improve the utilization efficiency of cultivated land.Although many studies on cultivated land abandonment have been carried out at home and abroad, there are few systematic explorations from the perspective of the family life cycle.China’s cultivated land management model is mostly based on rural families.Farmers,as the main decision-making body of cultivated land abandonment, their decision-making behavior must be deeply affected by family endowment, which is closely related to the stage of family life cycle. Therefore, combined with the comprehensive characteristics of farmers’ families, this paper analyzes farmers’ cultivated land abandonment behavior from the perspective of family life cycle.Firstly, according to the theoretical connotation of the family life cycle and its research and development context, combined with the actual situation of China’s rural areas, the rural family life cycle is divided.Later,on the basis of the systematic analysis of the mechanism of the family life cycle on the behavior of farmers’ abandonment of cultivated land and the discussion of the mechanism of the labor force’s non-agricultural transfer in this process, the Logit and Tobit models were constructed using the micro survey data of rural households in the hilly and mountainous areas of Jiangxi province from 2020 to 2021 for empirical analysis:(1)Influence of the family life cycle on the decision and scale of abandonment of farmer households;(2)Examining the mediating role of non-agricultural labor transfer in the influence of households on farmland abandonment behavior in stable periods;(3)Influencing factors of farmland abandonment behavior in different family life cycle stages of farmers. The research results show that:(1)The family life cycle significantly affects the decision of whether to abandon farmland and the scale of abandonment.Compared with the families in the rearing period, the possibility of abandoning the farmland in the stable period and the empty nest period was significantly higher, and the scale of the abandoned farmland in the stable period, the maintenance period and the empty-nest period increased. There is no significant difference between the abandonment decision-making of farmers in the burden period and maintenance period and the situation of families in the rearing period.(2)Compared with the families in the rearing period, the families in the stable period can indirectly affect the scale of farm abandonment through the increase of non-farm labor transfer.(3)There is heterogeneity in the influencing factors of farmers’ farmland abandonment behavior in different family life cycle. The farmland abandonment behavior of families during the rearing period is mainly affected by registered population, whether agricultural machinery is used, whether to participate in the transfer of farmland and the level of irrigation in the plot. The farmland abandonment behavior of households in the burden period was positively affected by the fineness of the plot and the level of irrigation. The cultivated land abandonment behavior of stable family is affected by annual family income, the cultivated area of farmland, whether agricultural machinery is used and participation in cultivated land transfer. The farmland abandonment behavior of households during the maintenance period is affected by the health of the head of the household, registered population, the cultivated area of farmland and the annual family income. The cultivated land abandonment behavior of empty nest families is affected by the cultivated area of farmland and plot fineness.Based on the above conclusions, this paper puts forward the following policy recommendations:(1)Fully consider the needs and priorities of farmers with different family life cycles, provide targeted policy guidance and incentives to alleviate abandonment, and promote the appropriate concentration of cultivated land resources in hilly and mountainous areas to professional management entities.(2)Take multiple measures to further improve relevant support policies and alleviate the abandonment of cultivated land, which mainly includes:(1)Promote stable non-agricultural transfers and improve the quality of non-agricultural employment.(2)Actively construct the land circulation market and improve regional agricultural socialization services.(3)Strengthen the construction of agricultural productive infrastructure in hilly and mountainous areas, and improve the cultivation conditions of abandoned land.
