Objective:Our aim was to study whether obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS)is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and carotid artery atherosclerosis. Methods:We selected 159 patients who have been diagnosed as OSAHS and 159subjects without OSAHS as control group at Geriatric Department in Ruijin Hospital from January 2009 to december 2015.All subjects were examined by polysomnography. The Mann-Whitney U test was applied to analyze the relationships between OSAHS and NAFLD and carotid artery atherosclerosis. The patients with OSAHS were divided into mild OSAHS(n=53),moderate OSAHS(n=46)and severe OSAHS(n=60)three groups according to the apnea hypopnea index(AHI).The patients with OSAHS were also divided into three groups which were mild(n=49),moderate(n=39)and severe group(n=71)according to the lowest oxygen saturation(L-Sa02).Chi-square R×C contingency table was used to analyze the relationship of the severity of OSAHS and NAFLD.Results:No significant differences were found in the age, gender, body mass index(BMI),blood pressure, diabetes, alanine aminotransferase(ALT),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alkaline phosphatase(ALP)and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase(GGT),creatinine(Cr),triglycerides(TG),total cholesterol(TC),high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL),low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL)between OSAHS patients and healthy controls(P>0.05).The significant differences were found in AHI,L-Sa02and the total recorded time spent below 90%oxygen saturation(TS90%)between OSAHS patients and healthy controls(P<0.001).The occurrence of NAFLD was significantly increased in OSAHS patients versus controls(P<0.05).Moreover,the occurrence of NAFLD was significantly different among the patients with different severity of OSAHS(χ2=6.455,P=0.040)and the OSAHS patients with different severity of hypoxia(χ2=6.097,P=0.047).However,no significant differences were found in the carotid artery intima media thickness(IMT)and carotid-artery plaque between OSAHS patients and healthy controls(P>0.05).Conclusion:OSAHS can increase the prevalence of NAFLD.The severity of OSAHS and hypoxia is positively related to the prevalence of NAFLD.OSAHS can not increase the prevalence of carotid artery atherosclerosis.
