| In the past half century,with the rapid development of science and technology,human beings have made tremendous progress in ameliorating life quality,but this also triggered a series of global ecological problems.All the ecological problems are threatening the survival and sustainable development of human beings and other creature.It was under this background that ecolinguistics,a discipline specializing in language and ecology,emerged.Ecological discourse analysis is in the research range of ecolinguistics.In a broad sense,ecological discourse analysis includes the ecological analysis of discourse and the analysis of ecological discourse,the research object of the former is ecological factors of various discourses which can be extended to the study of ecological and non-ecological factors in the language system,but the later is discourses about ecology.This thesis selects 20 environmental news reports from China Daily in the second half year of 2017,and divides the 20 reports into two types: Report 1-10 are classified as the first type and the theme of the first type is Trump’s withdrawal from Paris Agreement.By using and extending attitude system,a subsystem of appraisal system,this thesis will explore the ecological discourse types of the reports and reveals the ideology of mainstream media when dealing with environmental issues.Report 11-20 are classified as the second type,with a theme of various impacts of climate change.This thesis will analyze the ecological discourse types and green grammar in the second type by using transitivity system.The study mainly focuses on the three questions:(1)What are the attitude resources and the evaluation objects in the reports?(2)What kind of ideology do the evaluations reflect?(3)What are the ecological discourse types of the reports? Is green grammar properly used? If not,how to improve the writing mode of environmental news reports?Major findings are presented as follows:(1)Judgment resources and appreciation resources are mainly used for evaluation in the reports of first type.As for the evaluation objects,“Trump”,“China” and “Paris Agreement” are the objects being evaluated most frequently.(2)From the analysis in the thesis,we can know that the reporters of China Daily advocate that the public should understand the seriousness of climate crisis,the urgency of solving environmental problems and the necessity of jointly dealing with climate crisis.However,in their reports,human interests are regarded as the only starting point,which is not conducive to ecological harmony.(3)In the two types of reports,most attitude resources and process clauses belong to ecological beneficial discourse,with a minority of ecological ambivalent discourse and ecological destructive discourse.The reports of second type have a certain amount of green grammar,for anthropocentrism and classism are included and growthism is negated at most cases in the reports.Based on the findings,some suggestions are given to improve the writing mode of environmental news reports.Firstly,reciprocal words and nominal structure can be used to eliminate the difference between agents and patients.Secondly,some new pronouns that refer to both human beings and other creatures can be created and added into the pronoun system,thus abolishing classism in language.By adopting the theoretical framework of systemic functional linguistics,this study constructs a feasible model of ecological discourse analysis,enriches the research approaches and methods of ecological discourse analysis.Besides,this study is also of value for improving the writing mode of environmental news reports. |
