Abstract/Summary:
Possessing the Secret of Joy,like Alice Walker’s other novels, deals with the life condition of black women. The distinctive features of this novel lie in its theme and the narrative method The novel addresses the issue of circumcision in a host of monologues and reminiscences.Combined with delicate psychological descriptions,it exposes a strong flavor of African women life and the unique and expressive characters. In view of this,to convey the original text and the author’s emotions appropriately is of great significance.A translation with the guidance of functional equivalent theory would help to achieve the goal. Therefore, this report analyzes the difficult points from lexical, syntactic and stylistic levels and demonstrates how functional equivalence theory can work in the translation of Possessing the Secret of Joy in particular and in translating novels in general. The report is divided into five chapters.Chapter one introduces the background and significance of this translation project.Chapter two describes the process of translating articles, including the preparation work before translation as well as the following arrangements.Chapter three gives a brief introduction to the theory of functional equivalence, which emphasizes the accurate transmission of information and the similar reaction between target language receptor and source language receptors.Chapter four discusses in great detail how the theory of functional equivalence has worked in lexical, syntactic and stylistic levels in the translation, applying the translation strategies of four-character application, conversion of parts of speech, addition and so on,to accurately convey the information of the original text, and make the translation conform to the Chinese expression habit.Chapter five summarizes and introspects the whole translation, pointing out findings and limitations of the translation practice.Through reading this translation, hopefully,Chinese readers will get informed of the evil practice and pay more attention to basic human rights of African women. The report is expected to provide some experience for those who will translate other novels written by Alice Walker.
