| The present report describes the process and strategies of translation of the novel,Still Glides the Stream,under the guidance of relevance theory,and attempts to demonstrate the possibilities of style representation in the fiction through indirect translation.Relevance theory pays emphasis on cognition and communication,especially influences of cognitive environment on the reference of the communicative purposes.The inter-relationship connected with the reader’s contextual and cognitive environment are crucial for the translation,especially when the source-language readers and the target-language readers don’t possess the similar cognitive environment.Under the guidance of relevance theory,the present translator adopts some corresponding translation strategies and skills,such as amplification,conversion,combination and makes specific case analysis from such aspects as lexical,syntactic and stylistic levels.The report is composed of five chapters.The first chapter is an introduction to translation tasks,including the writer’s life,content of target text and linguistic characteristics.The second chapter centers on the theoretical basis,which mainly deals with the development of relevance theory,delivers an introduction to style and meanwhile attempts to associate them with style representation in the translation of Still Glides the Stream.The third chapter focuses on the process of translation,with the description of preparation before the translation and proofreading after the translation.The fourth chapter is the case analysis in which various translation techniques and skills are taken flexibly to solve translation problems under the guidance of relevance theory,and thus representing and recreating the style of the original text.The final chapter is the reflection,in which limitations of the task and some future suggestions are pointed out. |
