| “Rural Trilogy” is the classic work of Mao Dun(1896-1981),a famous writer and literary critic in China.Mao Dun created Spring Silkworms and published it in November 1932.Later,he created Autumn Harvest(1933)and Winter Ruin(1933).All three works constitute the “Rural Trilogy”.In 1956,the “Rural Trilogy” was translated into English by Sidney Shapiro, who is an excellent translator. As a diasporic translator,Shapiro’s cultural identity is of great research value, and hybridity is typical of his cultural identity. However, there is few study on his hybrid cultural identity, especially on his translation of “Rural Trilogy”.This paper combines hybridity with cultural identity to reveal the effect of the translator’s hybrid cultural identity on the translation. This paper focuses on Shapiro’s translation of “Rural Trilogy”,and discusses it from the following three aspects: whether Shapiro’s translation reproduce the theme, characterization, and style of the original text;what are the features of Shapiro’s translation strategy;the way that Shapiro’s hybrid cultural identity influence translation. The results show that Shapiro’s translation presents the content of the original text entirely and accurately, and his translation exhibits the features of focusing on thematic representation, style reproduction and the readability of the translation.Shapiro’s hybrid cultural identity helps him understand the content and theme of the original text,as well as the possible needs of the target readers. Therefore he mainly uses domestication translation strategies in his translation, and he uses the translation methods like paraphrase, omission to enhance the readability of the translation, and help readers understand the meaning of the original text. However, for Shapiro’s native language is English rather than Chinese, his understanding of some details is not thorough, and his translation may deviate slightly from the original text.At the same time,Shapiro,as a translator in the Foreign Language Press,is required to promote Chinese culture in his translations and to present the anti-imperialist and anti-feudal themes of the original texts. As a result, the translation expresses the theme of the original text accurately while trying to reproduce the stylistic characteristics of the original text. Therefore,in studying the traslation of Shapiro,we should pay attention to the influence of the translator’s hybrid cultural identity on his or her adoption of translation strategy and the quality of the target text. |
