This report is based on the translation practice of the excerpts of Chapters 6 and 7of Justice Without Trial: Law Enforcement in Democratic Society.The book is mainly about the police culture and practice.Jerome Herbert Skolnick,author of the book,is a leading scholar in the area of police practice.The book itself is also considered authoritative in the field of police culture.The book has its linguistic features at three levels.At the lexical level,the source text is full of jargon which is commonly used by foreign police.However,the jargon doesn"t have corresponding Chinese versions.At the syntactic level,spoken language and sentences with complicated logic and structure are hard to translate.At the textual level,the quotations in the source text have many pronouns.As pronouns are used less frequently in Chinese,how to deal with these pronouns is worth considering.All these difficulties bring challenges to the translator.Under the guidance of George Steiner’s fourfold hermeneutic motion(trust,aggression,incorporation,compensation),the translator adopted various translation strategies,such as addition,division,free translation,restructuring and omission,to get a better translation.Through this translation practice,the translator believes that George Steiner’s hermeneutic motion is applicable to the translation of legal information texts.The translator hopes that this translation report can provide inspiration and help for the translation of texts with similar features.
