The Study And Application Of Symbols In Gustav Klimt’s Painting Background

In Austria at the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century in the history of painting,the artist Gustav Klimt applied symbols to his own works,and in the later period,he absorbed Oriental elements and reformed and innovated,becoming his own unique artistic style.Symbols give Klimt’s pictures a gorgeous visual effect and a strong symbolic meaning.Symbols are not only universally known by the public,but also have multiple meanings when they are combined with different artistic images.At different levels,art is also a symbol for human to express emotions.Klimt’s works express his thoughts on life and human nature,which are expressed by the combination of realism and symbolism,emphasizing the gorgeous visual effects and the style of integration and innovation,especially the Oriental symbols in his later works,and the harmonious unity of Oriental images and western figures in the picture brings a unique sense of vision and mystery.Dense eastern images are piled up in the picture,and bright and bright background colors appear in the picture.This unique form language attracts the attention of the author,which inspires the author’s later creation.The author thinks whether the combination of local cultural symbols and western materials will produce more different picture effects.However,in Klimt’s painting background,instead of being full of rich images,there are some empty color blocks,which is no longer an increase of symbols but a decrease.Such blank symbols also form a unique form language in the picture.The blank symbols and the clustered symbols in the picture form a contrast of density,that is,symbols can be the addition of things,or the reduction of things,China has a similar form of symbol expression,that is,"white space".For some thoughts and feelings that we can’t describe in terms of actual matter,we can express them in terms of symbols.This is why symbols are symbolic.In this paper,from the first picture with the creation of the symbols of the unconscious thinking,explore what symbols,symbols have what meaning,how to show in the picture,in combination with Klimt in different periods are analyzed using symbols rule,finally and his creation,from the aspects of subject matter,composition,color,innovation to further understand the important role of symbols in creation.The innovation of the author lies in the use of traditional works with Chinese characteristics as symbols in the oil painting,through the techniques of generalization,exaggeration,deformation and so on to produce works with unique meaning,showing the emotional world of the author’s heart.Through the study of symbols to better use and interpretation of realism and graphic painting combined with symbolic works of art,and further understand the use of semiotics and the meaning of artistic symbols.
