Abstract/Summary:
Wei Yingwu,a famous poet who lived in the glorious period of Tang Dynasty, witnessed the decline of the highly prosperous Tang Dynasty which led to his great changes in the poetic style and personality.Wei was also a distinctive poet in the dali period. He was regarded as the pioneer of the realistic and allegorical school of poet writing because of his realistic writing style(originated by Du Fu)reflecting the crude reality and people’s sufferings.Besides,he is also one of the most important landscape poets in Tang Dynasty because of his distinct writing style. After being a government official,Wei Yingwu resided peacefully in the countryside with a belief in Zen faith till the end of his life.Wei’s landscape writing style is simple, light, free, honest and gentle, which is rarely seen among ancient Chinese poets and has a high reputation among poetic theory researchers. However, the current academic research on Wei Yingwu’s landscape poetry is insufficient. Therefore, this article will analyze Wei Yingwu’s landscape poetry from the perspective of ecological criticism and present an in-depth systematic study on this issue. In the beginning of this article,a brief introduction of Wei Yingwu’s life experience and landscape poems and a critical analyzes of the relevant research on Wei Yingwu and his landscape will be given.Chapter One explores the origin of Wei Yingwu’s pastoral landscape poetry.Wei Yingwu’s dedication to landscape poetry is analyzed from his life experience of witnessing the tragedy of his family and country. Then the description of the physical and spiritual rebirths of the poet linking to his peaceful life in the countryside was provided.Chapter Two discusses the Zen elements in Wei’s landscape poems. The highly developed Zen culture in the Mid-Tang Dynasty had a profound impact on poetry creation in this period. The Zen culture has not only directly affected the poet’s worldview, but also brought new elements into poetry creation. The characteristics of Wei’s poems are described as follows: Zen state—-the ecological environment in landscape poetry;Zen inspiration—the fixed form and the vitality of spirit which are also the underlying reasons for the uniqueness in Wei’s poetry. The third chapter analyzes the aesthetic characteristics of Wei Yingwu’s landscape poetry from the perspective of natural ecology, including the harmonious mutualism of man and nature. The fourth chapter analyzes inspiration of life in Wei Yingwu’s poetry, including the life and home consciousness that helps to raise the awareness of protecting nature and caring for life and encourages people to stay close to nature as well as to actively construct a poetic life. The final part of the thesis gives a conclusion to the study of Wei Yingwu’s landscape poetry from the perspective of ecological criticism with an aim to shed some new light in tackling the current ecological issues.
