Teacher talk,which is an indispensable part of classroom instruction,is a language used by teachers in class.In the actual teaching environment,it has become a problem which is worth studying that how teachers use language to strengthen the relationship with students,motivate students’ enthusiasm and activate the classroom atmosphere.So far,domestic scholars have done a lot of research on teacher talk.However,most of the research focuses on teacher talk itself,such as the amount of teacher talk,the feedback of teacher talk and so on.Only a few scholars have analyzed teacher talk from the perspective of Appraisal Theory.Based on Appraisal Theory,the study aims to explore the distributions of Attitude resources between an excellent teacher and a student teacher in junior middle school English class,and find the similarities and differences between the two teachers.The study takes X city X junior middle school as the research field,and randomly selects an excellent teacher and a student teacher in the eighth grade as the research participants.Through classroom observation and classroom recording,the study explores the following questions: 1)What are the distributing features of Attitude resources in the excellent teacher’s talk and the student teacher’s talk in junior English class? 2)What are the similarities and differences in the distributions of Attitude resources between the student teacher who is in the early and later stage and the excellent teacher? 3)What are the similarities and differences of the student teacher herself in the early and later period in the distribution features of teacher talk based on Attitude resources in junior English class?It demonstrates that there are some similarities and differences between the excellent teacher’s talk and the student teacher’s talk in Attitude resources.1)Both the excellent teacher and the student teacher adopt Attitude resources in teacher talk.Numerically,the excellent teacher’s Attitude resources are richer than the student teacher’s Attitude resources that are in the early period.In the later phase,the number of Attitude resources has greatly increased in the student teacher’s talk.2)In the excellent teacher’s Attitude resources,the percentage of Appreciation resources ranksfirst,the proportion of Judgment resources is the second,and that of Affect resources is the least one.3)In the early stage of the student teacher’s Attitude resources,the percentage of Appreciation resources ranks first,the proportion of Affect resources is the second,and that of Judgment resources is the least one.In the later phase,the student teacher has a tendency to gradually draw close to the excellent teacher in Attitude resources that the occurrence frequency of Appreciation resources is the highest,the percentage of Judgment resources is secondary,and that of Affect resources is the least one.However,Appraisal Theory is an extremely complex system.In addition,the time of data acquisition is limited,and the corpus data are relatively small.These elements make the study still need to be further improved.The research needs to collect more data and enrich the result in the future study.Meanwhile,the study proves a new attempt and takes Appraisal Theory as the theoretical foundation,which hopes to help student teachers learn from excellent teachers in teacher talk and promote their career growth.
