Teacher talk(TT)has long been the focus of researchers at home and abroad.However,most of the them only highlight the characteristics of Teacher Talk itself,such as teachers' questions,dialogue patterns,speed,to name just a few.Only a small number of researches have been carried out from the interpersonal perspective.Therefore,based on the central Attitude system of J.R.Martin's Appraisal theory,the present research conducts a comparative case study between Chinese and native oral English teachers,aiming to seek for some Attitude features in their Teacher Talk and make efforts to find out how they have affected the oral English classes.With both quantitative and qualitative research methods,this research has discovered more Attitude resources in native oral English teachers' talk than their Chinese counterparts'.The distribution rule of three subsystems under Attitude in Chinese and native teachers' talk is similar: the frequency of Appreciation ranks first,followed by Judgment,and Affect is the least one.Besides,the positive resources in both kinds of teachers' talk overwhelm the negative ones.Despite the similarities,differences also exist.Native teachers tend to apply more Affect and Judgment resources to connect with students and affirm their ability.For Chinese teachers,though the Appreciation takes up relatively high frequency,the realizations of it are limited in expressions like “okay”.Therefore,compared with Chinese teachers,the atmosphere in native teachers' class under recording is more enlightening,relaxing,and harmonious.Students are more satisfied with the evaluation methods,frequency as well as the teaching effect in native teachers' class.What's more,all students under investigation have presented strong eagerness for teachers' positive and elaborate evaluation.The present research broadened the application of Appraisal theory,provided suggestions for the improvement of college oral English classes and afforded research methods.However,as an exploratory case study,the research area is narrow with not enough persuasion.Therefore,the research still needs to be enriched and completed in future study.
