The report is based on the translation of “Whither Anglo-Saxon Marxism?”selected from the fourth chapter of Critical Companion to Contemporary Marxism. As a philosophical essay,it has unique formal features: on the lexical level there are a lot of philosophical terms and polysemy is very common throughout the text;on the syntactical level, there exist numerous compound-complex and long sentences;on the textual level, this essay is full of logicality and critical thinking. From the perspective of Gutt’s Relevance Translation Theory, the report discusses how to reproduce the information of the source text to the maximum in the process of English-Chinese translation. The report consists of four chapters.Chapter One introduces task description, the original text and its author.Chapter Two is about translation process, which includes pre-translation,during-translation,proofreading and quality control.Chapter Three discusses the application of Relevance Translation Theory in the translation practice, and elaborates on the translation cases from lexical, syntactical and textual level. In light of Relevance Translation Theory and according to the formal features of the source text, some translation methods are used to maximize the degree of relevance between the source text and the target text, such as the adding of footnotes, separation, integration and the addition of conjunctions.Chapter Four summarizes the translator’s gains and shortcomings from his translation practice.
