The prohibition of overseas trade, that is,the prohibition of private overseas trade. Before the Ming Dynasty, there was no so-called "ban on the sea".The official or private maritime exchanges of the Chinese governments were more frequent.By the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, the domestic rebel forces, such as Zhang Shicheng and Fang Guozhen, were still strong enough to occupy the island and prepare to make a comeback. In the south of the country, there were Japanese feudalist organizations called the Japanese pirates to loot and harass the coastal areas of China, and in the north, there were four guerrillas left by the yuan and Mongolian forces to retreat to the desert. These different armed forces had a huge threat to the new Ming Dynasty, which directly prompted Zhu Yuanzhang to change the practice of encouraging the development of overseas trade since the song and Yuan Dynasties and enforce the ban on the sea.In addition, the traditional natural economic background, the limitations of the rulers’ own thoughts and the impact of some unexpected historical events made the ban a double-edged sword throughout the development of the Ming Dynasty. The Ming Dynasty’s ban on the sea was an important part of the Ming Dynasty’s foreign relations and foreign trade. It had a significant impact on the social economy, politics, military affairs, diplomacy and other aspects of the Ming Dynasty, making China from the prosperous feudal dynasty to the decline. It not only ended the Ming Dynasty, but also influenced the subsequent Qing Dynasty, making China fall into the ranks of the laggards in the world. Therefore, whether from the political, economic, military or legal perspective to explore the Ming Dynasty’s ban on the sea has great historical and practical significance. In addition to the introduction and conclusion, this paper includes three parts. The first part is the establishment of the Ming dynasty sea ban system. This paper mainly discusses the definition and characteristics of the sea ban system of the Ming Dynasty, the maritime communication between China and foreign countries before the formation of the sea ban system of the Ming Dynasty, the historical background of the formation and various reasons for the formation of the sea ban system of the Ming Dynasty. The second part is the main content of the Ming dynasty sea ban system.Starting from the marine prohibition decrees issued by the Ming Dynasty, this paper summarizes the characteristics, contents and practice of the marine prohibition decrees of the Ming Dynasty. The third part is the function and analysis of the Ming Dynasty’s sea ban system. This paper analyzes the role of the Ming Dynasty’s sea ban system in the development of tribute trade and coastal defense construction, and finally describes the positive or negative impact of the Ming Dynasty’s sea ban at that time and later generations.
