| Panghuang is one of the representative works of Lu Xun who is a famous Chinese writer.It includes eleven short stories written by Lu Xun from 1924 to 1925.After the publication of Panghuang,many scholars translated some short stories in it.The Yang’s version is popular at home and abroad.As study materials for home English learners,it has been published until now.William A.Lyell is famous for studying Lu Xun and his works.Out of interest,Lyell translated Panghuang,which was published by University of Hawaii Press in 1990.Lyell’s version,as a learning textbook for many schools overseas,has been widely circulated.However,many scholars pay more attention to and study the translation of Lu Xun’s Nahan,but the study on the translation of Panghuang is little.Translation ethics has been gained more and more attention from translation researchers since the 21stcentury.The thoughts and theories of translation ethics from Antoine Berman,Lawrence Venuti,Anthony Pym and Andrew Chesterman are prominent.Andrew Chesterman put forward five models of translation ethics(ethics of representation,ethics of service,ethics of communication,norm-based ethics and ethics of commitment),which offers more comprehensive models of ethics for translation study.On the basis of Chesterman’s five models of translation ethics,the thesis makes a comparative study between the Yangs’ translation of Panghuang and Lyell’s.The thesis discusses the embodiment of translation ethics in their translations,and the translation strategies and methods they used.It aims to give translators some enlightenment on dealing with translation ethics so that they can produce better translations.In the aspect of ethics of representation,Lyell’s translation performs better than the Yang’s in terms of representing the content and the author’s intention,while the Yangs’ translation is more prominent regarding representation of the original style.With respect to ethics of service,the Yangs serve Foreign Languages Press while Lyell serves target readers.In terms of ethics of communication,in order to make cross-linguistic and cross-cultural communication possible,the Yangs and Lyell all obey target language’s grammatical rules.In the aspect of cultural translation,the Yangs and Lyell reasonably adopted foreignization strategy and domestication strategy,literal translation plus annotation and liberal translation so as to convey Chinese culture.In the process of translation,when ethics of representation had conflicts with norm-based ethics,the Yangs and Lyell used ethics of communication to mediate.They put ethics of communication in the first place so as to facilitate cross-language and cross-cultural communication. |
