| Informative texts with content as its primary focus are required to be translated into a direct and plain one and the one easily to be understood. However, informative texts usually contain a lot of cultural words, terminologies and long sentences, which are difficult to translate On this account, this report focuses on how to translate informative texts. This author has consciously adopted explicitation strategy in her translation of Performing China on the London Stage:Chinese Opera and Global Power,1759-2008.Explicitation in translation refers to expressing the vague or abstract information in the source text in a more explicit way in the target text, enabling the original meaning and logic much clearer. This book contains complicated history issues, many political discussions and theatrical performances. For those who acquire little knowledge about Sino-British relations and the development of Chinese theatre at that period,it is really hard to understand the original meaning and logic in the source texts. Therefore,as an effective way to overcome barriers in culture and language, explicitation plays a vital role in the translation of such an informative book.Based on the translation of chapter 7,this report discusses how to realize explicitation in the translation of informative texts so as to make the target texts more consistent with target readers’ language habits and thinking modes to facilitate their understanding and appreciation of the knowledge and viewpoints in the original texts. This report intends to analyze how to realize explicitation from lexical, syntactic and discourse levels by summarizing some specific translation techniques on each level including addition, annotation, conversion, division and adding conjunctions. It provides a systematic approach to the use of explicitation strategy in English-Chinese translation, showing how to keep the original language style and aesthetic value while conveying the original information accurately. Also,it is hoped that this report can shed some light on translators to apply explicitation strategy in the translation of informative texts. |
