Explicitation in translation refers to presenting the vague or implicit information clearly in the target text.Proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet, the concept provides new insight to translation studies, and many researchers contribute their wisdom to expanding the connotation of explicitation. As an effective way of overcoming language and cultural barriers, explicitation is frequently used in the translation of different types of texts.Informative texts give top priority to the transfer of information, which requires the translation to be direct and plain. As a result, explicitation plays an important role in translating informative texts. The thesis intends to explore explicitation in the translation of informative texts. The author manages to explicitly display the originally obscure information by considering target readers' language habits and thinking modes,so as to facilitate readers'understanding of the knowledge and argument logic in the original text. The appropriate degree of explicitation is also discussed in order to keep the aesthetic value of the original rhetoric devices and cultural connotationsThis thesis is a case study based on the translation of War without Mercy:Race and Power in the Pacific War.By citing examples from the translation practice, effective translation techniques of explicitation are summarized from lexical, syntactic and discourse level. In addition, this thesis studies the degree of explicitation and proposes two effective translation methods:domestication, and literal translation with annotation or explanation. Both are effective in avoiding excessive loss of the aesthetic value on the premise that the information is conveyed clearly and accurately.
