Rapid automatized naming refers to the rapid and accurate naming of a series of familiar stimuli, and at present a substantial amount of research has found that rapid automatized naming has great potential in predicting reading ability(Araujo,2017).Lundberg(2002)proposed that reading includes word reading and reading comprehension.Although the role of rapid automatized naming in reading has been unanimously recognized, there are still controversies on the relationship among word reading, reading comprehension and rapid automatized naming.Furthermore, little attention has been paid to the children’s second language reading. It is of great significance to study the mechanism of rapid automatized naming on second language reading for understanding the cognitive development characteristics of children’s second language reading and improving their English ability. Therefore, behavior and eye movement experiments were conducted to explore the effect of rapid automatized naming on English foreign language word reading and reading comprehension of primary school children through two studies(including four sub experiments). Moreover, this study would provide reliable prediction tools for children’s English reading development. The main purpose of study 1 aimed to explore the relationship between Chinese children’s rapid automatized naming and English word reading from the word level. In study1 a,a behavioral experiment was conducted to investigate the differences of the prediction of children’s English words reading by different tasks of rapid automatized naming. Finally, alphanumeric naming(numbers, letters,Chinese characters)was selected as the most predictive tool for children’s English word reading. On this basis, the eye movement experiment was conducted in study 1b to explore the general eye movement characteristics of Chinese children’s rapid automatized naming, and to analysis the dynamic process of rapid automatized naming more precisely. The results showed that only two indicators, fixation count(FC)and reading time(RT),are effective in predicting the ability of children’s English word reading, and further confirmed the results of behavior test, that is,alphanumeric naming is the strongest predictor of English word reading. The main purpose of study 2 aimed to explore the relationship between Chinese children’s rapid automatized naming and English reading comprehension from the text level. In study 2a,by analyzing the behavioral data, the effect of different naming tasks on children’s English reading comprehension was investigated. In study 2b,eye movement experiment was conducted to further explore the mechanism of rapid automatized naming task on children’s English reading comprehension. It was found that both behavioral data and eye movement data showed that letter rapid automatized naming is the most predictive for reading comprehension, while reading time(RT)is the most effective eye movement index to predict English reading comprehension. The following conclusions could be drawn in this study:(1)Children have different characteristics in five rapid automatized naming tasks. The naming speeds of numbers,Chinese characters and letters are significantly faster than that of colors and objects, showing a strong automatic advantage.(2)Alphanumeric naming(numbers, letters,Chinese characters)is the important predictor in children’s second language word reading, which could effectively predict children’s second language words reading ability.(3)The letter rapid automatized naming has a strong predictive effect on reading comprehension, which could be used as a significant indicator to predict and distinguish children’s second language reading comprehension ability.
