The current study tried to examine the mediating role of WM (working memory) in the relation between RAN (rapid automatized naming) and reading comprehension through establishing and comparing several hierarchical regression models. Four WM tasks were programmed by E-prime2.0.24normal freshmen’data were analyzed by correlations and hierarchical regression method to discuss their performances on RAN, reading comprehension, and four WM tasks. The results show that WM plays a mediating role in the RAN-reading relation. And because of the multi-component nature of WM and the speciality of Chinese character identification, the current study redefined the WM components according to its processing channels and, for the first time, compared the mediating powers of auditory WM and visual WM, and found that the former was more effective than the latter in mediating power. The explanations of the results are given. The current study, on the basis of comprehensively exploring the mediating role of WM, further discusses the possible components involved in the RAN-reading relation in order to have a clearer picture of the complicated Chinese reading process.
