| Motivation research occupies an important position in the field of second language and foreign language learning at home and abroad. We found that many domestic and foreign researchers have shown a strong interest in research related to motivation, and they are studying motivation from different angles, but demotivation——The opposite influence of motivation, especially the demotivation phenomenon of students in the central-western regions,is often overlooked. This article will draw on my own internship experience, based on the research content of Gardner’s motivation theory, motivation theory proposed in the field of cognitivism,D?rnyei’s three-level motivation theory and second D?rnyei’s L2 Motivational Self System. The purpose is to investigate the demotivating factors of student’s English learning in a high school in Hanzhong City. This research attempts to solve three research questions:(1)Does the sample students have demotivation in English learning ?(2)What are the main factors that lead to the demotivation phenomenon?(3)How to eliminate demotivation in English learning? In order to solve the above three problems, this study uses a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, including questionnaire survey method and interview method. The research objects are 360 students from a Public High School in Hanzhong City,Shaanxi Province. They come from 6 parallel classes in the first, second and third grades of high school. As a supplement to the questionnaire survey, the author randomly selected 13 students from third grade classes to have a interview based on recalling experience and invited 3English teachers to conduct interviews. The results of the research are as follows:(1)The sample students have demotivation phenomenon in English learning.(2)The demotivating factors are: textbooks, environment, students(self factors),teachers(intensity in descending order).(3)Grade difference analysis:students(individual factors)have no significant difference;the higher the grade, the greater the impact of teachers, teaching materials and environmental factors on demotivation of students’ English learning.Analysis of gender differences: There is significant difference only in the dimension of students, and boys’ individual factors have a greater impact on the demotivation. There is no significant difference between male and female students in the three dimensions of teachers, teaching materials and environment. |
