The visual metaphor is a form of visual culture,and it is the result of the continuous expansion of the research of the metaphor and its combination with visual culture.The previous research on metaphors focuses on language and rhetoric,taking words as the carrier and basing on similarity,logically and directly.The visual metaphor takes the image as the carrier,forming the relationship from the original domain to the target domain,and hides the profound meaning behind the form.Our research on visual metaphor aims at recalling people’s humanism spirit,which is influenced by the increasing number of images,and cultivating the thinking ability,cognitive ability and aesthetic ability.Focusing on the art world,this paper takes art works as an example to discuss the generative mechanism of the visual metaphor and divides it into two parts,one is the construction mechanism of visual metaphor,the other is the interpretation mechanism.Before discussing the generation mechanism of the visual metaphor,this paper sorts out the meanings of vision,visuality as well as visual culture and compares visual metaphor with verbal metaphor,which lays the foundation for the study of visual metaphor.The construction mechanism of the visual metaphor is centered on artists.Artists,under the joint action of their own cognition,emotion,experience and external objective factors such as political environment and social background,use artistic means such as deformation and color to defamiliarize common things and hide the meaning to be expressed in the form.In the construction of the visual metaphor,the artist presuppositions the hidden appreciator,who can also be called the second artist At the same time,the artist should appropriately create an aesthetic distance,which is neither completely strange nor purely realistic.The interpretation mechanism of the visual metaphor is centered on the viewer.On the basis of seeing the visual metaphor,the viewer interprets the visual metaphor with his imagination and association ability This is the process of recreating the artistic work,and also the process of reconstructing the artist.The process of interpretation is not entirely dependent on the subjective will.The viewer needs to find objective basis for the interpretation by comparing the same visual metaphor in different works with the help of art history,so as to restore the artist’s intention as far as possible.After experiencing the above two dynamic processes,the visual metaphor is finally generated.When studying the generation mechanism of the visual metaphor,some neglected but meaningful details in artistic works will be called back to people’s vision.At the same time,people will also be able to realize the values,aesthetics and thinking ability of artists and viewers as cognitive subjects from two directions and two ways.All kinds of images bring great visual impact nowadays.People are easy to lost in the form of images and ignore the broad connotation behind them.It is not only the transmission of meaning,but also a powerful measure to call for the return of humanistic spirits to make meaninglessness produce meanings and reveal the hidden meaning of symbols by the way of the generation of the visual metaphor.
