| During the COVID-19 pandemic, online education across the country raises high requirements for college students’ learning autonomy. For lack of sufficient research on the learning engagement and learner autonomy,it is necessary to explore the relevant issues in order to help students improve their English online learning autonomy during COVID-19 even in the further study in online learning. This study explored the current situation of online learning engagement and learner autonomy ability as well as their relationship through questionnaires and interviews.Participants in this study include sophomores and juniors, majoring in English, all from Shanxi University of Finance and Economics. There are three research questions in this study:(1)What is the current situation of college students’ online learning engagement?(2)What is the current situation of college students’ learner autonomy ability?(3)What is the relationship between online engagement and learner autonomy? The aim of this study is to understand the current situation of online learning engagement and the situation of learner autonomy ability for English majors, and discuss the relationship between students’ learner autonomy ability and online learning engagement.Major findings of the research are listed as follows:(1)the general situation of online learning engagement was above average. The skill engagement was found superior over the others of all four subscales(skill engagement, emotional engagement, participation engagement and performance engagement);(2)the situation of learner autonomy was also above average.Speaking of each subscale, these participants’ ability of using learning strategy effectively was the best among five subscales(understanding teaching objective and plan, formulating learning objective and plan, using learning strategy, monitoring the use of learning strategy, evaluating and monitoring the learning process);(3)the result shows that online learning engagement and learner autonomy exhibited a strong positive correlation;skill engagement and participant engagement have substantial predictive power over the ability of using learning strategy effectively, formulating learning objectives and plans, the evaluating the learning process. |
