The Whole is a special series of notes developed by composers who are not satisfied with the traditional major and minor musical styles.Since the beginning of the 20 th century,the diatonic scale has been further developed in Claude Debussy’s works,pursue a kind of illusory,hazy and ambiguous acoustics effect.The use of diatonic scales has been around for more than100 years,starting with Claude Debussy’s impressionists musical.During this period,the works of the "diatonic",a unique artificial mode of sound,varied in pitch organization and musical style.In this paper,the author makes a detailed analysis of Claude Debussy,Béla Bartók,the American composer Howard Hanson and the Belgian Chinese composer Zhang Haofu’s four works with diatonic scale as the main material of creating pitch,sums up different pitch organization techniques.This paper is including three parts.The chapter 1 is a summary of the whole tone scale,mainly introducing the features and classification of the whole tone scale,trying to explore the origin of the whole tone scale;In the second chapter,from the four works of "Fan","Whole Tone Scale","Mist" and "Er Ren Tai",the author analyzes how composers used whole tone scales in different periods,after the analysis of the second chapter,the author summarizes the composing techniques of the diatonic Pitch Organization.
