With the increase of oil field production,engineering production technology still needs constant innovation and development.The translation of petroleum science and technology text on geology helps learn from foreign advanced technology and work experience.As an English-Chinese translation practice report on petroleum science and technology text,the selected source text is the third section of a scientific thesis“Reservoir Characterization of The Bone Spring and Wolfcamp Formations,Delaware Basin,Ward County,West Texas.” In the process of research,the author finds that the original text presents the following features at lexical level,frequency use of terminology,abbreviations and compound words;at syntactical level,passive voice,nominalization and long and complicated sentences are commonly utilized.As a result,guided by Catford’s translation shift theory,considering the stylistic features of petroleum science and technology text and the differences in sentence structure and language expression between English and Chinese,the report summarizes the specific shift methods of applying Catford’s translation shift theory to guide the translation of such texts from the perspectives of vocabulary,grammar and sentence structure.The author hopes that this translation practice report can provide a reference for text translation in related fields.
