Xi Jinping:The Governance of China,Volume Ⅲ contains a collection of spoken and written works by the Chinese President Xi Jinping during the period from October,2017 to January,2020.It is the latest theoretical achievement of the Communist Party of China in state governance in the new era.The broad use of conceptual metaphors in the book makes abstract political concepts vivid and can help the international community better comprehend Xi Jinping ’s thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era.The data of this thesis was derived from 92 passages in the Chinese version of Volume Ⅲ as well as its English translation.Based on Conceptual Metaphor Theory, this thesis classifies conceptual metaphors and then analyzes the significance of difference between them and the translation strategies in the book by adopting case study with quantitative and qualitative methods. This thesis categorizes conceptual metaphors in Volume Ⅲ into 13 types(i.e.,journey metaphors and building and construction metaphors)based on the 13 source domains proposed by Kovecses. The calculation of the resonance value of source domain of each type reveals the usage of conceptual metaphors in the book.Based on Newmark’s seven translation strategies, quantitative method is undertaken by frequency distribution analysis to examine translation strategies and Chi-square test to clarify the significance of difference between conceptual domains and translation strategies. This study shows that seven translation strategies are employed to translate conceptual metaphors in Volume Ⅲ.Translation strategy with the highest frequency is"reproduce the same image in the target text".This study can provide insights for more readers on the understanding of governance ideas proposed by the Chinese government and the conceptual metaphors in political discourses. The author also hopes that this study could contribute to the enhancement of China’s political discourse and soft power in the future.
