| The second volume of “Xi Jinping: The Governance of China”,including 99 of President Xi’s speeches, conversations, instructions and letters from 2014 to 2017,was published in 9 languages in 2017;it has been well received at home and abroad since then. That volume highlighted the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era,and Xi’s perspective on building a community of shared future for mankind, helping improve the world’s understanding of the Chinese government’s philosophy,China’s development, domestic and foreign policies, and response to the concerns of international society.English version of that volume was translated by a team of top experts in translating and published by the Foreign Languages Press in Nov.2017;it has attracted extensive attention from the international community and,in particular, the community of translation studies, taking it as both source of information and sourcebook for translation studies. The present thesis took the Chinese version and English version of Xi Jinping:Governance of China(Volume 2)as the subject of research, and focused its efforts on analyzing the both versions from Appraisal Theory perspective, intending to analyze the influence of attitude, engagements, and graduation on appreciation of the original texts and on representation in the target texts.Put forward by Martin in 1990 s,Appraisal Theory is a theoretical framework extending the scope of interpersonal meaning which was developed by Halliday in his functional grammar.Appraisal Theory emphasizes the importance of appraisal resources to text apprehending;the resources include three subsystems: attitude, graduation, and engagement, among which the attitude plays a central part in the whole system. The present thesis analyzed the distribution of appraisal resources in both the Chinese and English version and the motivation underlying them, studied how and why these resources influenced decision making in translation process, and checked how translators chose their strategies for and approach to translating, thus hoping to shed a light on the translation of other documents with similar kind.Research showed that attitude engagement and graduation resources had a different frequency, indicating the SL author’s difference in attitudes, determination, and perseverance. The English version of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China(Volume 2)had a positive echo to the appraisal resources in the original texts in most cases, thus representing as faithfully and appropriately as possible the tones of the original.Research also indicated that translators chose foreignizing strategy for and literal approach to translation if the circumstances permitted. The research indicates that foreignizing strategy and literal approach help enhance cultural confidence, promote cultural communication and mutual understanding. |
