An Analysis And Translation Of Evaluative Resources In English News About “China-US Trade War”

Over the past 40 years,China and the United States have maintained a long and stable mutually beneficial trade relationship featuring structural synergy and convergence of interests.Since taking office in 2017,however,the new administration of the US government has trumpeted “America First”,regardless of the current stable economic situation between the two countries.The favorable China-US economic and trade relations are on the edge of breaking up,with a “trade war” at the corner,which arouses great attention among both Chinese and American people.For a better understanding of the issue,this thesis,based on J.R.Martin & P.R.R.White's(2012)Appraisal Theory,selected 10 articles from the www.usnews.com as its research objects to explore the deeper stance and attitudes of US media(or people)on trade friction with China.As an extension of the Systemic Functional Linguistics,Appraisal Theory mainly studies the interpersonal meaning in language,about the author's attitude towards the content in the discourse.The theory enables the translator to explore the source text from three aspects: attitude,engagement,and graduation.And then the author counts the distribution of the evaluation resources expressed in the ST and analyzes how they are used to express writers' stances.Finally,the translator explores proper translation strategies in the course of translation so as to reproduce the writers' attitude in ST.The study found that different from other types of news,the explicit attitude of writers is rare to be seen in the ST and large quantities of the third party's voices are quoted to present writers' stances so as to maintain the objective image of news media.Therefore,“Heteroglossic” becomes the main means news writers used to achieve their interpersonal intentions,with attitude inter-weaved into a quotation.In view of this situation,“turning implication into explication” has become the fundamental principle guiding the whole translation work.And translation approaches adopted there include addition,omission,adjustment,and deletion.
