A Correlation Study Between English Academic Self-concept And English Academic Achievement Of Senior High School Students

Learners’ emotional elements play a great role in English learning.Self-concept is one of learners’ emotional elements,which is important in learners’ learning and the process of teachers’ teaching.Self-concept contains English academic self-concept.For studying the condition of senior high school students’ English academic self-concept and the correlation with English academic achievement.This research does an investigation on some senior high school students in Huaibei.This essay mainly discusses following questions:1.Does gender affect the English academic self-concept of senior high school students?2.Does the division of arts and sciences have an influence in self-concept of senior high school students?3.Does gender affect the English academic achievement of senior high school students?4.Does the division of arts and sciences affect English academic achievement of senior high school students?5.What is the correlation between senior high school students’ English academic self-concept and their English academic achievements?This paper uses questionnaire survey and interview to investigate English academic self-concept of 200 students in Huaibei and takes students’ mid-term examination as the standard of academic achievement,and uses SPSS to analyze the data.Results are as follows:1.Gender affects the English academic self-concept of senior high school students.Gender significantly affects the general English academic self-concept,and girls’ academic self-concept is higher than boys’ one.2.The division of arts and sciences doesn’t have an influence in self-concept of senior high school students.3.Gender has an influence on the English academic achievement of senior high school students.Gender significantly affects the achievement of writing,and girls’ achievement is better than boys’ one.4.The division of arts and sciences does not have an impact on English academic achievement of senior high school students.5.Both senior high school students’ English academic self-concept and their English academic achievements have positive relationship.General English academic self-concept has the highest relationship with general English academic achievement,and writing academic self-concept has the least relationship with writing achievement.This paper suggests that senior high school’s teachers should know more about the relationship between senior high school students’ academic self-concept and academic achievement and help students form suitable and right academic self-concept to promote their academic achievement better.
