Marquez is one of the most famous contemporary novelists in Latin America Literature. For a long time, scholars have mostly been putting this classic writer in the context of the rise of Latin American Literature, especially focusing on the magical realism of his work,in which major attention is paid to the Nobel Prize-winning work named A Hundred Years of Solitude, while not enough to another excellent novel named Love in the Time of Cholera. This novel is a representative work of the author’s late writing and is considered as the best one by himself,so there is a very wide area for the research on Love in the Time of Cholera, especially on its superb narrative arts. This thesis intends to discuss the narrative characteristics of this novel from multiple angles based on a close reading of the text and the help of appropriate theories.Chapter Ⅰ and Chapter Ⅱ study the narrative arts of the novel from the traditional perspective of classic narratology theory, focusing on researches on the narrative in a narrow sense.Chapter Ⅰ analyses the narrative perspective of this novel and introduces it from the perspective of “Projection” in the “Discourse” theory of classic narratology.Zero focalization helps the narrator to be omniscient and present all of things by telling stories on various themes. Also, paralipsis is been skillfully used.At the same time, zero focalization also enables the narrator to intervene in the story and make philosophical comments, which carries the theme of the work and the writer’s thoughts.Chapter Ⅱ discusses the narrative time sequence of this novel and introduces it from the perspective of “Tense” in the “Discourse” theory of classic narratology.Firstly, interpret the analepsis of the novel as a whole to show its effect on the three elements of a novel. Then analyze the subtle chronological disorder of the novel, interpreting the “flash back” and “flash before”respectively. Finally, this thesis analyses the key-shaped deep narrative structure that corresponds to time sequence, and explores the close connection between narrative time sequence and narrative structure.Chapter Ⅲ and Chapter Ⅳ are concerned with the new intercultural and interdisciplinary trends, paying attention to researches on the narrative in a broad sense. With the help of other appropriate literary theories, even interdisciplinary theories of Humanities and Social Sciences, there’s way to deeply interpret the narrative techniques of the novel. In Chapter Ⅲ,“Third Space” theory is used to analyze the space narrative of Love in the Time of Cholera. It systematically excavates the pluralistic and open triple spaces in the novel, including the first space intertwined with light and shade, the second space of inner fantasy and the third space of infinite possibilities.Chapter Ⅳ analyzes the sensory narrative of the novel in terms of Woolf’s “Sight” theory. On the one hand, this novel inherits visual and auditory narrative techniques from the “Sight” theory, presenting visual-auditory narrative,in which sight is the main part and auditory is the auxiliary part.On the other hand,it develops Woolf s sensory narrative and completes special olfactory-taste narrative, linking taste with love, power, disease and the mysterious human body odor. The sensory narrative exists as a substitute for dialogue, which enhances the narrative effect of the novel. |
