Abstract/Summary:
The experimental method of Thinking-Aloud Protocols(TAPs)visualizes the thinking process of translation in the translator’s brain and shows the translator’s thinking activities while dealing with translation tasks,especially in the process of problem solving.This study is process-oriented,which can fill the vacancy of previous studies on translation process to some extent.In this study,a high level translator who has a certain understanding of physics and a translation beginner who knows little about physics are taken as the research objects,and the Thinking-Aloud Protocols(TAPs)are used in experiments to obtain data.The discrepancies in cognitive process of translation,translation proficiency,translation strategies and problem-solving ability of translators at different levels are compared,as well as the impact of these discrepancies on the target texts.The method of Thinking-Aloud Protocols(TAPs)require the subjects to master the skills of oral and real-time speaking psychological activities after training,and collect the recordings of the subjects in the formal test experiment.Compared with the traditional research methods of post translation text comparison,the method of Thinking-Aloud Protocols(TAPs)adopts positive research order to explore the cognitive process,translation proficiency,translation strategies and problem solving of translators,that is,to explore the influence these contributing factors posed on the quality and characteristics of target texts.Due to the positive research order,the Thinking-Aloud Protocols(TAPs)experiment shows the advances of the study.Furthermore,if the experimental method of Thinking-Aloud Protocols(TAPs)is widely used in translation teaching and learning practice,more and more students will have an insight into the inner brain mental activities.Therefore,we have valid reasons to believe that it might give a fresh impetus to the development of translation and cultivate more distinguish translation talents in the foreseeable future.This study also has the educational implications which might enlighten and give some instructions to educator and learner in the translation sphere.By observing high-level translators’ translation cognition,strategy selection and problem-solving process in TAPs tests,translation beginners can gain valuable learning experience and make rapid progress and growth.
