A Study Of Interpersonal Meaning In Electronic Sports Impromptu Commentaries From The Perspective Of Systemic Functional Grammar

With the development of the Internet,more and more people select electronic games as entertainment at leisure time,and the related industries of electronic games are in a period of rapid development.Among them,the live broadcast of electronic sports competition has gradually become one of the focuses of people’s attention.People understand the actual situation of the game through the impromptu commentaries of electronic sports.However,the study of electronic sports impromptu commentaries is still at the level of traditional literature.This article takes Halliday’s systemic functional grammar as the theoretical framework,selects the official English commentary of the World Championship Finals of League of Legends of Season Eight which has a wide influence in electronic sports,and explores realization of the interpersonal meaning of electronic sports impromptu commentaries from both the Mood system and the Modality system.This article focuses on the following three issues:(1)In the selected impromptu commentaries data,what are the general distribution of various realization of interpersonal meaning?(2)How is interpersonal meaning realized by mood and modality system in the electronic sports impromptu commentaries?(3)What changes have taken place in the distribution of the means of achieving interpersonal meaning in different stages and what kind of connotations can these changes explain?This article uses two analytical methods,qualitative research and quantitative research.The author applies the systemic functional grammar theory to E-sports impromptu commentary discourse,studies the specific application frequency of different realization of interpersonal meaning and explores the meanings it represents.Through detailed and systematic analysis of the corpus,the following conclusions can be drawn:(1)In the aspect of mood system,declarative sentences account for the largest proportion followed by interrogative sentences.Imperative sentences and exclamatory sentences account for a very small proportion.In the aspect of modality system,modalization and modulation are widely used in the corpus.Modal auxiliary to express inclination is the mostly used.Modal adjuncts which represent probability and usuality are in dominate.The interpersonal realization methods of E-sports commentary mainly focus on two aspects: the declarative mood in the mood system and the modalization in the modality system.(2)Taking declarative mood as the dominant mood type can make commentators’ comments describe the competitive situation comprehensively and accurately,and ensure the authority and reliability of comments.Using the other three mood types is aiming to attract the audience’s attention and create the competition atmosphere.Commentators tend to use modal auxiliary expressing inclination and modal adjunct representing probability,because commentators need to provide audiences with the information about the possibility of most actions of athletes and make conservative predictions on the direction of the competition in time,while the application of the usuality of modal adjuncts is to introduce the background information objectively.(3)With the gradual heat of the competition,the overall difference of three rounds in the distribution of different interpersonal meaning realization methods is small,but it is also gradually changing.Generally speaking,the use of interpersonal meaning in the mood and modality system shows a trend of Gaussian Distribution as the game progresses.Combined with the analysis of the specific match situation,we found that the subtle changes in this distribution subtly balance the intensity of the game process and the ups and downs of the audience’s emotions.The significance of this research is to enrich the relevant practice of the realization of interpersonal meaning in E-sports impromptu commentaries from the perspective of systemic functional grammar,enrich the research of interpersonal meaning in E-sports impromptu commentary,and at the same time,it also provides a new perspective for developing E-sports impromptu commentary work.
