| With the development of technology, our living conditions have become better and better. We begin to pay more attentions to our interests, such as sports, politics, economics, and so on. Reading sports news has become a part of our daily life. Through the investigation of the past studies from the previous scholars, only a small minority of studies on commentary in sports news from the perspective of Systemic Functional Grammar(SFG) can be found. Meanwhile, the Interpersonal Metafunction of commentary in sports news is very prominent. So the theory of Interpersonal Metafunction in SFG is applied to analyze commentary in sports news.The journalists have their favourite players and teams. And according to the features of commentary, when they write their commentaries, they always give their own subjective opinions or attitudes in their commentaries. When we read their commentaries in sports news, we must know about their writing skills and the features of commentary in sports news. Then we can get our own opinions free from the influences of the journalists. And we can look upon every piece of commentary in sports news more objectively and rationally. The theory of Interpersonal Metafunction in SFG is applied to analyze 50 commentaries in sports news, which be selected randomly from the very influential newspaper—Daily Mirror. And all the samples are about football game.Qualitative analysis is combined with quantitative analysis in this paper. Through the detailed and systematic analysis of the data which are from the proportion of every point in these 50 samples, such conclusions can be made: in the aspect of mood types, the declarative mood takes up most of proportion; in the aspect of Tense, the present tense takes up most of proportion; Modalization expressions are more than Modulation expressions, Probability takes up most of proportion; in the aspect of Value, the median value takes up most of proportion; about Orientation, subjective expressions and implicit expressions take up most of proportion. This paper aims to help people understand the commentary in sports news further. Meanwhile, it also aims to help people understand the Mood system and Modality system further to some extent, thus people can master the Interpersonal Metafunction in different discourses further. |
