| Intangible cultural heritage serves as a valuable memory of human civilization, the preservation of which is of great significance to creating a spiritual bond within the Chinese nation, promoting excellent Chinese traditional cultures and to sustaining human civilization. As one of the national intangible cultural heritages of Hangzhou, the craftsmanship of west lake silk umbrella carries strong regional characteristics. The C-E translation of the heritage helps protect Zhejiang culture, build up national confidence and promote the inheritance, preservation and development of intangible cultural heritages. The project report is based on the C-E translation of Craftsmanship of West Lake Silk Umbrella(《西湖绸伞制作技艺》).The source text introduces the details, the values and the cultural connotations of the craftsmanship in concise, understandable and appealing language.Under the guidance of the Skopos theory, the report proposes practical translation strategies and methods to tackle with major difficulties that the author has encountered in the translation process. For example, transliteration, literal translation, change of part of speech and translation with annotations are employed to deal with difficulties like the translation of terminologies,four-character idioms and culture-loaded words. At the syntactic level, methods like reconstruction, amplification and omission have been put forward with respect to the syntactic differences between Chinese and English to ensure that the target text is fluent and understandable. In addition, through flexible use of translation methods like literal translation, reconstruction and change of part of speech, the author has managed to reproduce faithfully the style of the source text.In writing the project, one of the greatest challenges the author faced with is to realize the faithful delivery of information and at the same time to ensure cultural communication and promotion. For this purpose, the author tried different kinds of means and she has improved her translation skills to a great extent. The author wishes that the report would provide a reference for the translation of texts on other intangible cultural heritages or traditional craftsmanship and could play a small part in the promotion of China’s intangible cultural heritages. |
