D.H.Lawrence is an unique literary master in the 20 th century in England. His series of novels take his hometown as the prototype, which truly reflects the social situation of England in the late 19 th century and the early 20 th century in many ways.In the early stage of Lawrence’s study, people pay more attention to the bold description of sexual love in his novels. However, with the deepening of the study,we can find that the spatial description in Lawrence’s novels is also worth researching. The origin of miner’s family provides an unique writing perspective for the construction of rural and urban space in Lawrence’s works,so studying Lawrence’s novels from the perspective of space criticism can further understand his creative features and emotional transmission. This thesis takes Sons and Lovers and Women in Love as the research texts to interprets the opposite space and alienation of human nature in Lawrence’s novels, combining the theoretical framework of space criticism and literary geography criticism. There are multiple sets of space opposition in Lawrence’s novels. From the perspective of geographic landscape, the agricultural space showing vitality is separated from the messy industrial space, and people who insist on the traditional agricultural production methods and living customs are forced to become isolated from the world. The encroachment of industrial civilization on agricultural geographical space is irresistible, and its strong invasion has spread from the open working space to the private family space. As the epitome of the industrial revolution in Lawrence’s novels, miners are subject to double oppression both physically and psychologically. The physical body constrained by the industrial system is inevitably mechanized, and the spiritual world bounded by material and rational education begins to collapse. When industrial civilization alienates humanity and destroys interpersonal relationships in the public area, the family space is also affected. The gender contradiction implied in the workspace and the family space stimulates inherent conflicts, while the alienation of human nature in the public space escalates the original contradiction in the family space. The imbalance of the relationship between the sexes in the family space is then transformed into the alienation of sexual concepts and parent-child relationships in the private sphere. In addition,Lawrence also depicted the decline of the old English countryside and the rise of emerging industrial cities with the conflicts between urban and rural space. The strong collision of the two kinds of opposing space in geographical landscape, lifestyle and spiritual culture intensifies the alienation of human nature under the urban-rural boundary. In the process of rethinking industrial civilization,Lawrence not only recognized the tremendous damage to nature caused by the process of industrialization, but also keenly gained insight into the trampling and poisoning of industrial capital on society and human nature, showing his concern for the identity crisis of modern people.
