The Urbanization Spatial Process Of The American Concession In Modern Shanghai(1862-1911)

After opening its port,Shanghai surpassed Guangzhou to become the first port in China,and under the circumstances of the establishment of concessions by foreigners,the urban space within the territory rapidly changed from a traditional village in the east of Taihu Lake to a modern city.Among them,Shanghai American Concession is not only one of the important port areas of modern Shanghai,but also the birthplace of Shanghai industry.The transformation process of the town in Shanghai into a modern city not only witnessed the transformation of the social environment in this region,but also played an important role in understanding the development process of modern Shanghai.By collecting and sorting out relevant documents and materials,this paper uses historical geography and Arc GIS methods to reconstruct the specific process of the transformation of the American Concession area in Shanghai from a traditional Jiangnan town in the south of the Yangtze River to a modern city,and analyzes the realization path and driving mechanism of this evolution process.The significance of this paper lies in clarifying the urbanization spatial process of the American Concession in Shanghai at the early stage of opening port,breaking through the bottleneck of existing researches on the data and methods of urban space of the American Concession in modern Shanghai,and discussing the role of the Shanghai port area in the urban spatial evolution process of the American Concession.First of all,this paper uses the documents of Shanghai Taoqi to reconstruct the rural elements of the American Concession area in Shanghai before the opening of the port,and analyzes the relationship between its distribution pattern and the river.Secondly,taking river creek and road as the main entry point,this paper systematically recoves the fading process of the former and the expansion process of the latter,and analyzes the influence of real estate development,municipal construction and population agglomeration in the conflict between the original water town appearance and urban space expansion.Finally,through sorting out the development of Shanghai port area,this paper analyzes the influence of port area on the urban spatial structure of the American Concession from three aspects: urban layout form,economic development and population scale.
