| COVID-19 pandemic that broke out in Wuhan,China in December 2019 has ravaged the world and is on the verge of a second outbreak.Although China has made a perfect impression on the world, the pandemic situation abroad is still not optimistic.Since the outbreak of the pandemic until the deadline of this study, scholars from different fields have made multi-faceted analyses of the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper will take the Sino-US COVID-19 cartoons as similarities and differences between China and America from the perspective of critical cognition. In recent years, multimodal discourse analysis has received widespread attention in the field of linguistics. With the development of the times, the media plays a role in social development that cannot be underestimated.Since scholars such as Forceville intersected metaphors with other disciplines in the 1990 s,studies on multimodal metaphors have continued. And scholars at home and abroad have conducted multidimensional and interdisciplinary analytical studies on multimodal media such as pictures and videos. The paper analyzes multimodal discourse from a critical cognitive perspective. To analyze the multimodal discourse of Sino-US COVID-19 pandemic cartoons,50 cartoons from each of the authoritative cartoon websites in China and America were collected as the research corpus.Chinese news cartoon website and American political cartoon website are mostly used as authoritative websites for political cartoons propaganda.Cartoons containing verbal and pictorial modalities from January to June2020 were selected from them for analysis and research. This thesis has the following findings from the multimodal critical cognitive analysis of the Sino-US COVID-19 pandemic cartoons.1 Taking multimodal critical cognitive analysis as the research perspective. This study constructs a multimodal cognitive model of COVID-19 pandemic cartoons, which provides reference for Sino-US multimodal discourse processing.Through the multi-dimensional inquiry and analysis of verbal, pictorial design, and color analysis, some of the similarities, differences, and motivations of multimodal discourse processing of Chinese and Western peoples are re-examined.2 Through the comparison of ideological power and cultural differences,it can be found that the differences in the perception of the treatment of the pandemic event originate from the above two differences.Ideological power differences determine the different attitudes toward the pandemic at the national level, and cultural differences reflect the general perception of the group toward the pandemic.3 Misunderstandings and prejudices arising from these differences can be ameliorated through media propaganda. In the media era, telling a good Chinese story and building a great nation’s image require the construction of an appropriate multimodal discourse system. The pandemic cartoons reflect the importance of multimodal discourse in emergencies, and this study goes on to conclude that appropriate multimodal discourse construction plays an important role in national foreign propaganda.4 This study explores the characteristics of multimodal representations of Western nations, and the importance of implementing foreign propaganda strategies with Chinese characteristics through the perspective of multimodal processing acceptable in the West. This study chooses to analyze the Chinese and the U.S COVID-19 pandemic cartoons corpus based on critical discourse analysis and conceptual blending theory, which on the one hand innovates the existing researches and realizes the social turn of cognitive linguistics and the cognitive turn of critical discourse analysis. On the other hand,it provides an in-depth consideration of current events combining language and society. In the information age of multimedia explosion, both words and images reflect people’s cognition of the world. The increased cognitive analysis of multimodal discourse can better reflect the humanistic concern of cognitive linguistics for social phenomena.By comparing the multimodal cartoons in China and the United States, the attention to the study of multimodal discourse will be paid. Also,it helps people to see the similarities and differences in Chinese and American ideological power and culture through different perspectives when facing the COVID-19 pandemic. |
