A Report On The Chinese-English Consecutive Interpretation Of China Aid-Jamaica Volleyball Project On Sports Coaches

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Jamaica in 1972,the two countries have maintained friendly and cooperative relations in economy,politics,culture and other aspects.The Chinese government decided to implement China Aid-Jamaica Synchronized Swimming,Badminton and other Technical Cooperation Project on Sports Coaches-2020 to help the Jamaican sports team improve their performance in international competitions.As Yunnan is located in a low latitude plateau,which is an ideal place for sports teams to carry out physical training,Yunnan has been selected as one of the training bases for the project.From 2018 to 2020,representatives of Jamaica synchronized swimming team,basketball team and volleyball team went to Kunming for two months’ training from June to July every year.In the second year of the implementation of the project,the author was hired as an interpreter for the volleyball team when they were training in Kunming,and conducted a two-month interpreting internship during the summer vacation in 2019.This report aims to analyze the author’s Chinese-English interpretation during the two-month training of the Jamaican volleyball team in Kunming,China.The process of interpreting was full of uncertainty and flexibility,and the dynamics of adaptability in adaptation theory can play a certain role in analyzing the volleyball interpretation.Making linguistic choices was a main challenge faced by the interpreter,and adaptation theory offered guidance for the comprehensive analysis of language use based on the multiple aspects of making linguistic choices,so the interpreter choose this theory to analyze the interpretation.The report is mainly divided into six parts,and the first and second parts mainly expound the project background,features of the interpretation task,the interpreting process,the mistakes and analysis.The third part is the introduction of the theoretical framework of adaptation theory,and the fourth and fifth parts are the typical case analysis and the summary.The last part is the transcripts and interpretation of the original speeches,and the revised version.The interpreter adopted contextual correlates of adaptability and structural objects of adaptability to analyze and summarize the problems and skills in her interpretation.It is found that the adaptation of contextual correlates of adaptability and the structure properly in the interpretation can help interpreters to solve some of the problems in making linguistic choices.As options are not equivalent,interpreters can consciously mark right choices in their range of possibilities from linguistic choices that can be made,so as to change their instinctive adaptation to the mother tongue while they are making linguistic choices.
