A Report On The E-C Translation Of "Indonesia:Urgent Need For A Policy On Repatriation Of Pro-ISIS Nationals From Syria:from The Perspective Of Julian House’s Translation Quality Assessment Model

In the 21st century,tremendous changes have taken place in the field of anti-terrorism at home and abroad.The Islamic State has become increasingly rampant,and the world is experiencing a major resurgence of terrorism.Terrorist organizations are more and more multi-centered and decentralized,and the means of attack are more varied.Regional stability is affected by terrorist activities,and geopolitical security risks are increasingly prominent.In November 2019,the author was recommended by a teacher of the College of ASEAN Studies to translate a political essay entitled “Indonesia: Urgent Need for a Policy on Repatriation of Pro-ISIS Nationals from Syria” published on the website of the Institute for Policy Analysis of Conflict(IPAC)by Indonesian scholars.The translated paper is intended to be submitted to Southeast Asian Studies.The source text is characterized by rich political and religious background,a lot of long and complex sentences,proper nouns,foreign names,and a part of the content is written in Indonesian.Based on the translation project,this report selects some typical examples and analyzes them in detail guided by House’s translation quality assessment model.It is found that the text to be translated is a political text.Considering its authority and its close connection with a country’s policies,guidelines,and political strategies,the translator is required to be extra faithful,highly sensitive to politics,and have a good command of the language.These requirements demand that the translator have a correct understanding of the original text and reproduce it rigorously and precisely.House’s Translation Quality Assessment Model is the theory of careful comparison between the source text and the target text,which is applicable to the translation of such texts.In addition,by applying House’s model,the author finds that when translating political texts,attention should be paid to maintaining the formality and objectivity of the text.Furthermore,the translation of vocabulary needs to be combined with the context.The translation should be as consistent as possible with the original in terms of ideational and interpersonal functions.
