The Research Of The Missionary Image In The Novels Since The New Period

The main content of this paper is the research of the classification and new changes of the missionary image in the novels since the new period,to grasp the change of the missionary image and the cultural psychological motivation behind this phenomenon.As a group of characters with distinctive characteristics in Chinese modern and contemporary novels,the image of missionaries not only has rich aesthetic value,but also contains profound cultural significance.Compared with other images in literary works,the image of missionaries possesses outstanding individual characteristics of exotic,foreign races,and pagan religions,at same time carries the collective imagination of Chinese society towards the West and the cultural identity of itself.The image of missionary provides a symbolic medium for our understanding of our such a large organization and nation,where we can rely on this medium to vent our curiosity,imagination,sense of nihility,or national identity.This paper is mainly includes four parts.The first part was to dig the historical relationship between missionaries and China.Firstly,defined the concept of missionaries and Christianity,and clarified the scope of the research subject;Secondly,it sorts out the missionary image in the novels from the early 20 th century to the1910 s,and explains the narrative characteristics of the missionary image in the "anonymous" period and the "common name" period.The second part was to classify the image of missionaries in detail.In this paper,the image of missionaries was mainly divided into four categories: "Vagrants in a foreign land","Conquerors with great ambitious","Preachers with benevolence and piety" and "NEW Chinese walking to the Chinese".For each image,there gave detailed interpretation of the cultural metaphors behind.The third part focuses on the new quality of the writing of the missionary image in the novels since the new era.It discusses the image’s ideological connotation,existence mode and contradictory core from three levels,focusing on the writer’s concern for individual loneliness and criticism of the alienation of human nature.The fourth part explains the cultural significance of the missionary image in the novel since the new era,grasps its unique aesthetic significance and transcendence characteristics,and demonstrates the more confident and open cultural concept of contemporary Chinese writers.Overall,the writing of missionaries by writers since the new era is a meaningful attempt in the history of literature,which shows us the indicative function and guiding value of literature as "humanology".
