| The level of college students’ classroom participation is an important standard to measure the quality of undergraduate teaching. At present, the level of college students’ classroom participation is not high,so how to improve the class participation of college students is an urgent problem to be solved.Teachers’ non-verbal behaviors refer to the student-oriented symbol system other than speech that occurs in classroom teaching, including gestures, eyes, facial expressions, body distance, etc.Appropriate non-verbal behaviors can create a harmonious classroom atmosphere and enhance students’ participation in class. However,it is still unknown how teachers’ nonverbal behaviors affect students’ classroom participation and whether teachers’ nonverbal behaviors have an impact on college students’ classroom participation. Therefore, this study aims to reveal the deep influence mechanism of teachers’ nonverbal behaviors on students’ classroom participation, and extend the application scope of the functional theory of teachers’ nonverbal behaviors to college classrooms.Research based on the theory of symbolic interaction and role expectation theory, constructs the teachers on the impact of nonverbal behavior on students to participate in the theoretical model, namely teacher’s nonverbal behavior(independent variables),the relationship between teachers and students class participation(intermediary variable)-students(dependent variable),and use the questionnaire survey to collect data to test empirically theory model.SPSS was used to conduct descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis and Process mediation effect test for the research data, supplemented by interview method to analyze and interpret the data results, and the following conclusions were drawn:(1)College teachers have a strong ability to use non-verbal acts, the relationship between teachers and students is close and harmonious, college students have a high degree of classroom participation, and the ability to participate in meta-cognition needs to be strengthened;(2)College teachers’ ability to use nonverbal acts is acquired through teaching and training;(3)The research capability of university teachers does not positively affect the teacher-student relationship in the classroom;(4)Teachers’ nonverbal behaviors significantly affect teacher-student relationship and students’ participation in class.Teachers’ gestures, paralinguistic expressions, facial expressions and postures all have significant effects on students’ participation in class and teacher-student relationship;(5)The teacherstudent relationship significantly affects students’ classroom participation;(6)The teacher-student relationship plays a partially mediating role in the influence of teachers’ non-verbal behaviors on students’ classroom participation.Teachers’ non-verbal behaviors can not only directly affect students’ classroom participation, but also influence students’ classroom participation through the teacher-student relationship. In order to enhance students’ classroom participation and improve the quality of talent training, colleges and universities should incorporate non-verbal behaviors into the teacher training system, perfect the teacher evaluation and incentive system, and balance the proportion of scientific research and teaching in teacher evaluation.College teachers should also pay more attention to their own non-verbal behaviors, build an intimate and harmonious teacher-student relationship in class, and guide students to improve their metacognitive ability. |
