Abstract/Summary:
The materials for this translation practice are excerpted from the second and third chapters of Nursing Care at the End of Life: Palliative Care for Patients and Families,a popular medical science book written by Joyce V.Zerwekh, professor of Nursing Program of Concordia University. In these two chapters the author mainly describes the profound impact of hospice care movement on the quality of hospice care and asserts that the importance the nurse’s self-awareness and self-healing ability on the dying. This project can be conducive to the public knowing more about the dying group, but also provide enlightenment for the development mode of hospice care for the majority of medical practitioners. The CAT software Power Echo is applied in this translation project, and a relevant term bank is established before translation. As a medical science reading,it doesn’t have too many obscure words in addition to several unusual terms, but features long and complicated sentences;and the target readers are the majority of the general public or patients with a certain type of fatal disease and their family members,as well as majority of medical practitioners. Therefore, the goal of translation task is to make the translation be accurate, fluent, professional and easy to understand. In this thesis,in the framework of the Eco-translatology put forward by Hu Gengshen, the translator analyses some long and difficult sentences in the source text by “three-dimension transformations”,namely the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions, and uses different translation skills such as amplification, specification and division to achieve the balance of original language and target language in meaning,in specialization and popularization,as well as in practical value and aesthetic value. After a plenty of case analyses, this translation report proves the feasibility of Eco-translatology in guiding medical text translation. In short, the translation report aims to promote the related study of hospice care among medical staff of China. At the same time,it also provides some reference and inspiration to scholars who study the application of Eco-translatology and translators who are engaged in the translation of medical works.
