As a master of modern Japanese literature,Natsume Soseki has created many well-known works such as I Am a Cat,Door and Hereafter in his short creative career. However,in the early days of Soseki’s creation, especially before he resigned as a faculty member and became a professional writer in Asahi Shimbun,he mainly wrote short stories. In just one year from 1905 to 1906,Soseki wrote several short stories such as The Empty Music of the Qin and The Inheritance of Interest were later compiled as The Collection of Yangxu which was published by Okura Bookstore in 1906.It is worth noting that these short stories created in a short period of time show different, even completely opposite styles. These different creative tendencies reflect Soseki’s different understanding of literature, and also have a certain influence on his subsequent novel creation. The short stories of different styles created by Soseki in the early period can be divided into two different categories: "sensibility" and "reason".The category of "sensibility" is for artistic and perceptual, while the category of "reason" is for life and rational. This article will be divided into three chapters. The first chapter first reviews Soseki’s concept of "inhuman affection"."Inhuman affection" is a concept put forward by Natsume Soseki in On Literature. He believes that "inhuman affection" literature is literature that excludes morality.Analyzing "Phantom Shield" and "Sou Lu Xing" combined with the concept of "inhuman feelings",these two short stories belong to the category of "emotion",which reflects Soseki’s "art" side and expresses Soseki’s love for pure love.Yearning, but at the same time,Soseki’s love almost always ends in tragedy. In the way of expression,Soseki often breaks the boundaries of time and space, shuttles between different time and space, and shows the pursuit of eternity.Chapter Two combines Two Hundred Days and Wild Fen to discuss Soseki’s "for life" side, which is specifically expressed as Soseki’s most praised and well-known criticism of society. In Two Hundred Days,Soseki combines his "margin" concept and social criticism, which are two seemingly opposed sides, around Agui and Aro’s talk full of "margin" and the behavior of Mount Aso,or To say "margin" and "non-margin" is to criticize.Tension is not completely opposed, but is dialectically unified. However,Wild Fen has no "margin".Through the portrayal of the protagonist Michiya Shirai,Soseki’s pursuit of an ideal personality is shown. The third chapter shows the entanglement between Soseki’s “reason”of scientific rationality and the “ sensibility ” of supernatural ghosts through The Inheritance of Taste and The Music of the Koto, combined with Soseki’s classic ideas in On Literature. The literary formula of(F+f)points out that Soseki has a positive attitude towards the relationship between supernatural factors and literature. This supernatural "illusion" can also stimulate readers’ special emotions and show Soseki’s unique attitude towards literature. Finally, the short stories written by Soseki in the early stage of his creative career showed Soseki’s more complex creative ideas, which were continued in his later novels.
