Feedback plays a key role in second language acquisition,and effective writing feedback can help improve the quality of students’ English writing.However,due to senior middle school teachers’ teaching pressure,heavy teaching tasks,limited time and energy,they can not give detailed feedback to all students’ compositions.In view of this,the automatic scoring and intelligent feedback system comes into being with the development of science and technology.The automatic scoring system can score quickly and give diagnostic feedback,which can lighten the load of teachers.Therefore,it gradually becomes a useful teaching aid for many teachers.There have been studies elucidating teacher feedback or automatic scoring and intelligent feedback separately,but few studies have compared these two feedback methods.Therefore,in terms of the change of senior middle school students’ English performance,attitudes towards these two feedback and feedback focuses,this research attempts to compare teacher feedback with Pigai intelligent feedback,aiming to investigate the feasibility of Pigai intelligent feedback in senior middle school English writing and explore the most useful way of improving students’ writing ability.This research will answer the following research questions:(1)Which feedback is more effective in improving students’ writing performance,teacher feedback or Pigai intelligent feedback?(2)What are the highlights of teacher feedback and Pigai intelligent feedback?(3)What are the students’ attitudes towards teacher feedback and Pigai intelligent feedback?This research took two parallel classes of a senior middle school in Shangrao City,Jiangxi Province as research subjects.Before the experiment,a pre-test was conducted,and the result showed that there was no significant difference in the writing performance of these two classes.So they could be selected as research subjects.The experiment class chose Pigai intelligent feedback and the control class adopted teacher feedback.After about two months of experiment,two classes simultaneously did the post-test.Besides,this thesis took examples and analyzed feedback focuses by adopting the latest 5 compositions of each student,a total of399,from the perspectives of vocabulary,grammar,content and structure.Furthermore,questionnaires and interviews were employed to students and teachers to know their attitudes towards the kinds of feedback.Results showed that teacher feedback was more helpful in improving the content and structure of students’ writing,while Pigai intelligent feedback was more beneficial in enhancing students’ diction.Precisely because teacher feedback focused more on the content and structure of the composition,and the feedback given by the teacher was more detailed and comprehensive.However,Pigai intelligent feedback concentrated on the vocabulary,and it would give various suggestions on the vocabulary in students’ compositions,such as synonym substitution,collocation and grammatical mistakes,etc.Combined with questionnaires and interviews,we conclude that both of these two types of feedback have advantages and disadvantages,but they are both accepted by students.Pigai intelligent feedback is more helpful in developing students’ writing interest,building their self-confidence,and relieving writing anxiety,while teacher feedback is more conducive to the revision and improvement of students’ compositions.In view of the irreplaceable advantages of these two feedback methods,it is recommended that teachers can combine the two methods during correcting the compositions,to achieve the complementary purpose.But exactly how to integrate these two feedback methods,teachers need to continue to explore in the teaching practice,to form a suitable teaching model for senior middle school English writing,which maximizes the effectiveness of English writing feedback teaching.
