| Analogy is a rhetorical device which was also taken as an argumentation method. It is the most basic thinking mode of human beings, and has been widely used in literary works. The analogical reasoning in Chinese classics shows the thinking mode and logical mapping of ancient Chinese. The translation of analogy is a vital part of the translation of classics. As a great book of Chinese annalistic history chronicle,Zizhi Tongjian has a grand structure and abundant materials. With its unique and profound historical value,it has become an indispensable book for the future generations. There are a large number of analogical expressions in Zizhi Tongjian, which are used to clarify the points and summarize the rules.Analogy exists in both concrete things and abstract principles, which can be daily events, myths and legends, historical anecdotes, fables, etc. An analogy occurs between two or among more things. In the spreading of Chinese classical literature works such as Zizhi Tongjian, accurate and wonderful translation plays a decisive role.Linguistic forms of analogical argumentation also show different attitudes. How to introduce this kind of analogical discourses into the target language correctly and arouse the emotional resonance of the target readers is a great challenge for analogical translation. This paper takes Rafe Champion de Crespiny’s translation version as the research object.Based on the five principles of equivalence theory proposed by Werner Koller, the author collects three kinds of analogical discourses in Zizhi Tongjian, namely, attributive analogy, relational analogy and structural analogy, thus building a corpus-based database, and analyzes the translation strategies applied by translators and the effect of translation in the target text.It is found that in the construction of analogical discourses, because the phenomena of attributive analogy and structural analogy are relatively simple,Rafe directly introduces these two kinds of analogy of source language into the target language. As there are rich cultural images in relational analogy,Rafe focuses on explaining the analogical images of the source language and introducing the analogical mode of the source language. In translating analogical texts,Rafe adopts such translation strategies as literal translation, literal translation with annotation, cultural equivalence, interpretative translation and explicitation. The author finds that Rafe focuses on the realization of denotative equivalence, followed by connotative equivalence.Normative equivalence is often sacrificed in the realization of denotative equivalence.Formal equivalence is also considered and translated to the great extent. This paper also finds that in the process of Rafe’s translation of analogical discourses, due to cultural barriers, mistranslation inevitably occurs;sometimes the translator focuses too much on the interpretation of the source language, which affects the readability of the target readers. Therefore, the author suggests that the translator should not only construct the analogical phenomena in the target language, but also consider the readability and pay more attention to the delivery of the style in order to reach better translation effect. |
